We all agree that aggressive sales techniques are a non-starter, and it can be hard to find quality in some of the larger convention floors (blackhat, rsa, etc). There has also been a history of big promises that have been followed by complete failure to deliver.

So how do you generally learn of newer tools or options out in the market? Is there advertising locations or styles that are generally going to be more effective for helping raise your awareness, even if you aren’t necessarily looking to actually take deeper look at the moment? Hell, do the “here are all the companies using us?” logo pages on websites even mean anything to you anymore?

I’m honestly curious how you have found your awareness of a newer product or tool being formed?

Full disclosure: I do work for a company that makes a tool and is still technically a startup. I’m not going to say who because I don’t want to derail any conversation by making this feel in any way like a back door ad attempt. I also fully believe that agree that word of mouth or seeing is believing is what will ultimately make something move into the common knowledge or truly stand out among the noise as something worth buying, which generally takes time. But that first step is just raising general awareness even if you don’t yet know details, And there are a lot of traps in the usual marketing playbooks that are more likely to result in people avoiding a product due to their annoyance factor, So I figured the best way to avoid those traps is to listen to those targeted by them.
