I know, I know. There's already a "what's an engineer" question making its rounds on the board right now. And these are all subjective to the person who's writing the job description. But I think that everyone has a general idea in mind when they hear each of these positions as to what it is. Security analyst, security engineer, and security architect. A gut feeling.

The way I see it, an analyst would work with established tools and processes, an engineer would build tools and processes (whether that means developing them or implementing them), and an architect would design tools and processes (again, either from the development or implementation standpoint).

In other words: an analyst is responsible for day-to-day, an engineer is responsible for executing project tasks, and an architect is responsible for planning projects and milestones. In this understanding, it's a Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 system.

Is that how you see it? If not, how do you see it? What's different about yours and mine, based on your experience and understanding? submitted by /u/skribsbb
