Items #1 and #2 on the CIS 18 controls are inventorying (and controlling) all hardware and software on the network. These items also exist in other frameworks and are really foundational to scoping and managing the security of a network.

What is the current state of tooling used for inventorying and monitoring those assets? It seems like there are tools that do this but not well, and/or are modules/adjunct functions of something else. What are people seeing / using out there?

edit: for clarity, I'm specifically curious about network visibility / observability and discovering and gathering hw/sw assets predominantly in that fashion. Endpoint solutions for software asset management, while helpful, don't really address the problems of network security and network assets.
